Press release from the office of Congresswoman Niki Tsongas
regarding the April 17th event
CONCORD, MA – April 8, 2009 – You are invited to attend a Patriots Day weekend ceremony at historic Barrett's Farm that will celebrate the expansion of the Minute Man National Historic Park’s boundaries to include this Revolutionary War Landmark, a first step towards the goal of the Park’s future ownership of the historic farm. The celebration will mark the start of Patriots Day festivities in Concord.
The ceremony will take place on Friday, April 17th, and will feature a reenactment of the British Redcoats arriving from Boston to search Barrett's Farm for stored munitions of local militia, as well as a musket salute from local Minuteman reenactors. Remarks will be given by Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, Save our Heritage Executive Director Anna West Winter, and Minute Man Nation Park Superintendent Nancy Nelson.
Last week, President Obama signed into law legislation introduced by Tsongas that extends the boundary of Minute Man National Historical Park by 67 acres to include the former home of Colonel James Barrett, the commander of the Middlesex militia during the Revolutionary war which was used to store the militia's munitions in the weeks preceding the Battle of Concord and Lexington. The British marched on Barrett's Farm in April 1775 to destroy the supplies of the colonialists in Concord. They were of famously met by local militia at the North Bridge in Concord, where the “shot heard ‘round the world” was fired – launching the American Revolution. The passage of the bill allows the Park to request appropriations for Barrett Farm, once it is restored by Save Our Heritage.
