Act of Congress expands National Park boundary

to include historic Barrett's Farm

Excerpt of a letter from Congresswoman Niki Tsongas to her constituents

Legislation to Protect Historic Barrett's Farm Becomes Law On Monday, I attended a ceremony at the White House where President Obama signed into law a large public lands package that will preserve more than two million acres across the country. Included in the bill was legislation I introduced to permanently protect historic Barrett's Farm in Concord, so that current and future generations can learn about the important role this site played in the birth of our nation.

The bill signed by the President adds Barrett's Farm to Minute Man National Historical Park, by authorizing an adjustment of 67 acres to the current park boundaries. The Concord site is the former home of Colonel James Barrett, the commander of the Middlesex militia during the Revolutionary war, and was used to store the militia's munitions in the weeks preceding the Battle of Concord and Lexington. The British marched on Barrett's Farm in April 1775 to destroy the supplies of the colonialists in Concord. They were of course met by local militia at the North Bridge in Concord, where the "shot heard ' round the world" was fired - launching the American Revolution.

I told several other lawmakers attending the ceremony about the role Barrett's Farm played in our nation's founding. Each was very impressed to learn about the rich revolutionary history of the fifth district and the essential role that several of our communities played in the war for independence. Now an important piece of that history will be preserved, and the thousands who visit Minute Man National Park each year to see first hand where the revolution began will have a greater understanding and appreciation of this historic event.
